Unexpected day trip

Tom had an adventure in mind on Friday evening, and asked me if I wanted to be surprised. I said, "Sure!"

So we got in the car the next day and he started driving, and it didn't take me too long to notice a general direction and come up with a guess.

The surprise destination -- Providence, Rhode Island!

For some reason, neither of us had really ever been there before, even though it's just over an hour's drive away. Most of our day trips, we drive north.

We really liked Providence!

We didn't have any specific plan when we got there, so we did a lot of walking around.

The area of town where RISD and Brown are is very hilly -- one big, steep climb. We saw a few students walking bikes who'd just given up.

The city proper was pretty level, though.

It was a gorgeous day out.

I liked the walkways all along the canal.

There were at least two different street fairs/outdoor concerts going on that we found just by strolling around.

One of them even sold kettle corn but I controlled myself.

We had a nice dinner up on Thayer Street, up by Brown, and when we left we both felt like coming back again soon.

  1. So - you should make another day trip (evening trip, really) to see Waterfire. There's a partial lighting on Friday, October 2nd, and a full lighting the following Saturday (October 10th). The Providence train station is an easy walk from Waterfire, so you don't even have to drive!

(Seeing the Waterfire platforms in one of the pictures made me think of this.)
