I'm trying to like coffee ...

But it's not going very well.

I'm a tea drinker, but apparently there are different health benefits to drinking coffee. So I decided to try a few different kinds.

The overall results average out to ... meh.

I've tried cheap coffees and not-so-cheap coffees. Medium roasts, dark roasts, espresso blends.
There was one French roast that was okay. The medium roasts all tasted awful, two others felt like I'd poured acid into my stomach, and yet another made me jumpy and tachycardic (which was not as much fun as it sounds).

My favorite so far? ... Hawaiian Kona coffee. Which isn't exactly available at Starbucks.

I'll probably try a few more here and there, but really ... I think I'm going to stick to tea.

  1. Some suggestions from a long-time, but whimpy, coffee drinker:

    * Stick to light roasts. Whole Foods usually has either Sumatra or Kona light roast beans that are quite good.
    * Assuming you're making it yourself, get a small French press and use that. Put the ground-for-percolator coffee into the press, add water that has just boiled, stir, and put the plunger on; wait a minute or two (until it looks dark enough, press, and decant IMMEDIATELY into a mug.
    * Dilute with milk (hey, I SAID I'm a whimp...).

This produces a very mild, non-acidic, yummy brew.

Stop by sometime and I'll show you!

  2. Funny thing is the light roasts I've had so far taste *terrible* to me -- the more palatable ones seem to be darker roasts, which I guess is the opposite of what everyone expects.

But even for the ones that "aren't that bad", I take them without milk and sugar. Harsh stuff!
